Dan Crenshaw, a proud sixth-generation Texan, had always envisioned himself as a future member of the United States Marine SEALs. They are an elite combat force renowned throughout history. However, due to his father’s work in the Colombian and Ecuadorian oil and gas industries, his family relocated. As a result, he completed high school in a different country. Fluent in Spanish, Dan graduated from Tufts University in 2006 and obtained his Naval Officer commission through Navy ROTC.
Dan’s Remarkable Journey to Regain Vision
Upon reporting to SEAL training in Coronado, California, fate brought Dan together with Tara, who would later become his wife. Following the successful completion of SEAL training, Dan embarked on his first of five foreign assignments. He joined SEAL Team Three in Fallujah, Iraq.
In 2012, during his third deployment in Afghanistan’s Helmand region, Dan’s life took a permanent turn. He sustained severe injuries from an IED bomb during a mission. After six months of intense combat, he was evacuated and emerged from a medically induced coma. The bomb had caused significant damage to his left eye and destroyed his right eye. Doctors believed he would never regain his sight.
However, supported by Tara’s unwavering presence, Dan underwent multiple procedures and miraculously regained vision in his left eye. The head surgeon hailed it as a true miracle. Undeterred by his injuries, Dan deployed twice more. First to the Middle East in 2014 and later to South Korea in 2016.
From SEAL Teams to Community Service
After serving 10 years in the SEAL Teams, Dan was medically retired in September 2016 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his military career, he received several prestigious awards, including the Purple Heart, the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor, and two Bronze Stars, one of which was awarded for valor.
Following his retirement, Dan pursued a Master’s degree in public administration at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Upon his return to Houston, Hurricane Harvey confronted Dan with the aftermath, devastating his neighborhood. Witnessing the unprecedented destruction, he selflessly volunteered his time to help his neighbors and assist in the rebuilding efforts. Through this experience, Dan not only witnessed the immense losses suffered by Texas but also the resilience and strength of its people, which inspired him to continue his community service.
In November 2018, the people elected Dan to represent the Second Congressional District of Texas. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, he holds a significant role in shaping policies related to various sectors. Specifically, Dan serves on the Subcommittee on Health, Environment, Manufacturing, and Critical Materials, as well as the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. Additionally, he is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, where he actively participates in the National Intelligence Enterprise Subcommittee and the Central Intelligence Agency Subcommittee.
Dan’s journey from military service to public service exemplifies his dedication to serving others and making a positive impact on his community and the nation as a whole.
